US Secretary of State John Kerry has today visited the bomb blast memorial park and honoured victims of the 1998 bombing of the US embassy.

Kerry, who took part in a wreath-laying ceremony, assured Kenya that the US will continue supporting the fight against terrorism and called for unity in the face of terror attacks.

“Terrorists will always fail” in efforts to instill fear and divide people and that “the future does not belong to them,” He said.

“We know that the struggle in which we are all engaged now is not going to be over soon — nearly two years ago at Westgate mall, five weeks ago at Garissa university and at other times,” the top US diplomat said. “Words are not sufficient to express our sorrow, our outrage, or our wish that we can somehow reverse time and bring all the victims back.”

The embassy bombing by Al-Qaeda was the worst attack in Kenya killing 213 people, followed by the recent Garissa attack where 147 lives were lost.

SECURITY TALKS WITH PRESIDENT UHURU

The top US diplomat arrived in Kenya on Sunday for talks on security cooperation and ahead of US President Barack Obama’s visit in July. He also met President Uhuru Kenyatta today to discuss ways to more effectively deal with threats posed by the militant group al-Shabaab.

“Today I held a meeting with the U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry to discuss investment, security and President Barack Obama’s upcoming visit to Kenya. We discussed the ease of doing business in Kenya and the opportunities for American firms.” read a post on Uhuru’s Facebook page.

“My Government needs to work more closely with the U.S. to control financing of terrorism. We also discussed the efforts to end the stalemate in South Sudan and stabilise Somalia. Secretary Kerry appraised me on US initiatives in ending the stalemate in South Sudan and spoke on efforts the US government was undertaking to support Somalia.”
