University lecturers end 54-day strike. The education practitioners decided to take the latest offer given to them by the govt.
University Lecturers have resumed classes today after calling off their 54-day countywide strike that had paralyzed learning in public varsities.
The dons arrived at the decision after agreeing to take the offer given by the government. The government through the Inter Public Universities Consultative Council Forum (IPUCCF) awarded lecturers a 17.5 and 3.9 per cent increment on basic salary and house allowances respectively.
According Uasu secretary general Constantine Wasonga said the decision was unanimous and asked members to resume work today .
“This afternoon UASU and IPUCCF have mutually agreed and signed the 2013-2017 CBA. As a union we request our members to return back to work tomorrow and do it diligently,” Wasonga said while addressing a press conference yesterday.
The new CBA has harmonized salaries of all lecturers, which was one of the issues the dons were discontent about.
“We agreed that now all academic staff are going to have equal pay and house allowance. We did harmonization and what remained of Sh10 billion we added to each and every lecturer equally so now we don’t have salary disparities,” said Wasonga.
The dons had in February rejected a Sh10 billion offer by IPUCCF offer by IPUCCF, which was awarding them a 3.2 and 1.6pc increment on salary and house allowance on grounds that it failed to harmonise salaries.
The CBA will be backdated from July 2013 to June 2017.
