Following the official hand-over at the office of the president in Harambee House, the acting president William Ruto left the vicinity in a presidential motorcade
President Uhuru Kenyatta has today left the country to honour his status conference at the International Criminal Court, a day after he unprecedentedly relinquished his powers to his deputy, William Ruto.
Uhuru announced yesterday during his parliamentary address that he was appointing Ruto as acting president so that he could travel to the Hague as a civilian and not as a sitting president as he did not want to drag the sovereignty of Kenya in what he termed as a personal issue.
“To protect the sovereignty of Kenya I will shortly sign a legal notice anointing Hon William Ruto as acting president as I attend the status conference. Therefore, let it not be said that am attending the status conference as the president of the Republic of Kenya. Nothing in my position or my deeds as president warrants my being in court.” Uhuru said in his speech.
NO CONVOY FOR UHURU
Following the official hand-over at the office of the president in Harambee House, the acting president William Ruto left the vicinity in a presidential motorcade, complete with outriders as Uhuru left in a grey Mercedes Benz bearing a private registration number plate.
Ruto has become the second acting president in Kenya after retired president Daniel Arap Moi who had acted for 90 days, as provided for in the constitution, following Jomo Kenyatta’s death in August 1978.
Had Uhuru honored the calls to ICC in his prominence as Kenya’s president, he would have become the first seating president in the world to appear in The Hague.
