President Uhuru Kenyatta has today officially opened the 6th Annual Devolution Conference in Kirinyaga University.

The 5-day conference brings together Governors across the country to celebrate the gains made by devolution.

This year’s Conference will build up from the previous one and allow the government and its key stakeholders to discuss what they have been able to deliver, the transformation over the last one year and to measure the progress made in the Big Four Sectors.

The devolution conference also provides a forum for members of the public to interact with both the local and national government.

According to the Council of Governors (COG) “the County Governments have put in place mechanisms to strengthen and deepen devolution by continuously setting up sub-counties, wards and decentralized entities including village council in order to expand public engagement in priority setting, decision-making and governance”.

The governors are expected to tour the Nyeri County Referral Hospital to assess the impact of devolution on healthcare.

Over 6,000 delegates are expected in Kirinyaga County for the conference.

“It’s a great honor to welcome you to Kirinyaga County on the auspicious occasion of the 6th Annual Devolution Conference. This is an important milestone in the maturity of our democracy as a nation,” Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru said.

The devolution conference takes off amid a revenue allocation tussle with senators demanding 381 billion shillings for counties against a planned KSh310 billion by the Treasury.
