Protests have broken in Uganda after the police forcefully abducted Bobi Wine at Entebbe airport on Thursday night, blocking him from traveling abroad for medical treatment.
“The police have violently abducted Bobi Wine from the airport, forced him into a police ambulance and is being driven to an unknown destination,” Bobi Wine’s Lawyer Nicholas Opiyo said in a tweet.
The demonstrators burned tyres and piled rocks and other barricades in the middle of the roads.
Bobi Wine was also reportedly assaulted and dumped at Kirudu Hospital.
“He told me that as soon as they closed the ambulance doors, he was again brutally beaten in front of a government doctor. They switched off the lights in the ambulance and started battering him! Bobi is now back in pain and he is dumped at Kirudu hospital. He has missed his flight and time is running out,” Bobi Wine’s wife Barbie said in a tweet.
Another legislator, Francis Zaake is also reported to have been with Bobi Wine was also detained.
Ugandan military and the police have reportedly cordoned off the government hospital where Bobi Wine is contained.
The Kyadondo East MP was arrested two weeks ago for allegedly inciting residents to stone President Museveni’s entourage during a campaign. He was later charged with illegal possession of firearms and ammunition at the military court in Gulu.
Bobi Wine had been in detention since then until 23rd August when the Government of Uganda dropped charges against him following protests across the country and mounting pressure across the borders.
