The IEBC has said that NASA’s proposed opposition vote-counting centre is illegal. NASA said they would create their own tallying centre.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman, Wafula Chebukati has warned NASA against its plan to set up a parallel tallying center in the August elections, terming the move illegal.
Chebukati has maintained that only the IEBC has the mandate to tally election results warning that the commission will work with other relevant government agencies to ensure that anyone who contravenes the law is brought to book.
We shall work with other State agencies to maintain law and order. If someone announces results which are not correct then that is a recipe for chaos and we do not want that to happen as a country,” Chebukati said.
Opposition leader Raila Odinga on Sunday announced that NASA will do a parallel tally and release its results after the August polls.
In what he described as “adopting a polling station” Raila told the crowd he was addressing in Kibra that they will have a committee of 50 people in every polling station, who will act as party agents and voter marshals and will be tasked with announcing genuine results against that of IEBC.
“IEBC will announce their results … and we as NASA will announce ours from our tallying center for comparison.” We will not accept fake results,” Raila said.
Nasa is yet to pick its flagbearer between ODM’s Raila Odinga, Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka, ANC’s Musalia Mudavadi and Ford Kenya’s Moses Wetang’ula but the three have said they’ll make the much-awaited announcement this month.
