Nigeria Protests – Scores Injured After Army Opens Fire on Protesters

The protests that have been going on in Nigeria, against police brutality, for the last two weeks took a bloody turn on Tuesday after the army allegedly opened fire at protesters at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos.

According to eye witness accounts from footage that have gone viral on social media under the hashtags #LekkiMassacre #LekkitollgateMassacre the soldiers opened fire at the demonstrators and were literally shooting “anything” on their sight that could move.

Dozens of injured people with broken limbs and gunshot wounds can be seen getting first aid on the streets while others caught in the shooting are calling for help from their hideouts.  According to reports, police barricades made it hard for ambulances to reach the scene and offer medical support to those injured.

#LekkiMassacre #LekkitollgateMassacre hashtags have been trending on Twitter on Wednesday with other nationalities across the globe including Kenyans, showing solidarity with the citizens of Nigeria in condemning the police brutality in Nigeria.

Curfew

The protests in Nigeria were sparked when citizens took to the streets to protest widespread claims of kidnapping, harassment, and extortion by a police unit know as the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
On Tuesday the state governor imposed a 24-hour curfew and deployed anti-riot police to the city.
