Nairobi leads the way in the registration of new voters

The mass voter registration exercise, which kicked off last week, is set to continue until February 14 with IEBC maintaining that it won’t extend the period.

Raila Accuses NIS of Interfering With Voter Registration

Cord leader Raila Odinga has accused the Jubilee government of colluding with the National Intelligence Service to interfere with the voter registration exercise in order to influence the outcome of the August polls.

According to Raila, NIS is taking BVR kits across to Uganda and Ethiopia and registering foreigners and also assisting citizens of the two countries to register as voters, adding that the agency is also assisting the same foreigners to acquire Kenyan identification documents then helping them cross into Kenya to register as voters.

We have credible information that the National Intelligence Service (NIS) is once again heavily involved in the on-going voter registration with the aim of influencing results in August in the same way it did in 2007 and 2013,” Raila said in a press statement.

This NIS-driven process is responsible for the multiple registrations, shared identity cards and many cases of people who are captured as registered when indeed they had never done so,” he said.

Leaders in Jubilee have refuted Raila’s claims saying that he is already sensing defeat and is merely looking for grounds to blame for his loss.

“As Jubilee we know that Raila Odinga knows he cannot stop the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta so now he is looking for excuses to use when he loses,” said nominated MP Johnson Sakaja, who is also eyeing Nairobi county gubernatorial seat.

The Interior Ministry has also condemned the cord leader’s allegations terming the, “malicious”.

If there is anything like that, the respectable thing the former Prime Minister ought to do is to record a statement with the relevant authorities so that action can be taken. The unsubstantiated claims are outrightly malicious and intended to undermine the voter registration process,” said the ministry’s spokesman Mwenda Njoka
