Matiang’i further said that media houses had been warned against broadcasting live the Nasa oathing, which would spread incitement in the country but they went ahead to disregard the warning.
Interior CS Fred Matiang’i on Wednesday announced that the decision by the government to switch off air the country’s major TV stations will carry on as the government investigates the media houses for “subversion.”
According to Matiang’i, who was ironically speaking at a press conference, some media houses are working with the opposition to propel their agenda to overthrow the government.
“The country’s security agencies will take action against some individuals who include but are not limited to certain media houses,” Dr Matiang’i said.
Matiang’i further said that media houses had been warned against broadcasting live the Nasa oathing, which would spread incitement in the country but they went ahead to disregard the warning.
“Some media houses chose to disregard this advice, their own code of ethics, self-regulation and the moral responsibility of every Kenyan to safeguard the security of their fellow citizens,” Dr Matiang’i said.
Chairman of the editors guild, Linus Kaikai’s, who is also the MD Nation Media Group, had on Monday revealed threats by the government to shut down and revoke licenses of media houses that would air the controversial swearing in of Raila Odinga.
Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has condemned the shut down saying it erodes media freedom.”This shutdown erodes the gains so far made in developing a free and responsible media industry and should never happen in a robust democracy that Kenya boasts of. As guaranteed by the Kenyan Constitution, media freedom should be guarded jealously at all times, “.
The council has also urged the State to restore signals of 3 TV stations shut down yesterday, saying any probe can be done as broadcasting goes on.
