You Can now get Back your Lost Kenyan Citizenship Restored

Kenyans who lost their citizenship during the error of the old constitution, which did not allow for Dual-Citizenship, will now be allowed to regain their status again.

According to Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, any person seeking to regain their Kenyan Citizenship will be required to lodge applications in Nairobi or at the Kenyan Embassies.

“Kenyans who need to regain their citizenship are required to go and apply. The Constitution says that to regain your citizenship, you need to file an application and the Foreign Citizenship Act prescribes the way to do this,” Matiang’i said.

The government has already received over 25,000 applications from Kenyans, who are seeking to regain their citizenship, which the CS says are pending at the Immigration offices.

Kenya’s new Constitution, promulgated in 2010, allows for dual citizenship but before it was enacted, 25,000 Kenyans holding dual citizenship lost their citizenship based on the repealed constitution.

According to Matiang’i 5000 of these have already applied to regain their Kenyan citizenship and have already been granted as required by the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act of 2011.

The CS has maintained that efficient systems are in place and the process of applying for lost Kenyan citizenship has been streamlined.

Applications for the Kenyan citizenship restoration are done online through eFNS portal (https://fns.immigration.go.ke).
