The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has shortlisted 13 candidates for the Deputy Chief Justice position.

The candidates, who are all women, were picked from a list of 15 candidates who had applied for the position to succeed Justice Kalpana Rawal.

JSC also named 18 candidates for the position of Supreme Court judge out of 21 applicants.

On Tuesday, the commission shortlisted six candidates out of 14 applicants for the Chief Justice position, which fell vacant last month, following willy mutunga’s retirement; Justices Smokin Wanjala, AlnashirVisram, Nambuye, David Maraga and Mbogholi Msagha, and Philip Nzamba.

“The Judicial Service Commission has today reviewed the applications received for the position of Chief Justice for completeness and conformity with the Constitutional and statutory requirements, the JSC Act and criteria outlined in the advertisement for the post,” JSC said in a press statement on Tuesday.

Retired judge Aaron Ringera, Professor Makau Mutua and Supreme Court judge Jackton Ojwang, who were in the race to succeed Mutunga, failed to pass the mark.
