A High Court Judge has directed the Communications Authority (CA) to restore live transmission for TV stations pending a full hearing of the case that was filed by Activist Okiya Omtatah on Thursday.

Judge Chacha Mwita ordered the Communications Authority of Kenya to restore live transmission for KTN News, Citizen TV and NTV.

He also barred the government from interfering with the signals of the various TV stations until the case is heard and determined on February 14.

Okiya Omtatah moved to court challenging government’s move to shut down the  three major TV stations saying it contravened the constitution.

Omtatah argued that the Government’s order is in utter violation of Article 33 and 34 of the Constitution, which guarantee media freedom and access to information.

Omtatah has sued Communications Authority of Kenya, ICT CS Joe Mucheru and Interior CS Fred Matiang’i.

The government switched off transmission for the above stations for airing the controversial swearing in ceremony of Raila Odinga on Tuesday even after the media houses had been warned against it.

Interior CS on Wednesday announced that the decision to shut down the stations will continue until investigations bordering on subversion are concluded.
