Fazul described his tenure at the board as one full of “excitement and joy”.
Fazul Mahamed, The chief executive of Non-Governmental Organisations Co-ordination Board has resigned.
The NGOs Board boss, whose tenure has been shrouded by controversies owing to the ad hoc deregistration of some major NGOs in the country, rendered his resignation letter to the chairman of the Board of Directors Amos Ntimama on Monday.
Fazul described his tenure at the board as one full of “excitement and joy”.
“During the past three years, my tenure at the board has been nothing short of pure excitement and joy” he said.
Some lobby groups and activists had also questioned Fazul’s qualification for the job and activist Okiya Omtatah moved to court in December to block the government from renewing or extending Mr Mahamed’s contract as the executive director of the NGOs board.
Omtatah argued that the government was committing an illegality by allowing Fazul to stay in office even after his tenure elapsed on November 24th.
“The irregular retention of the interested party in the public service beyond his contractual term has blocked the advancement of other deserving Kenyans who are qualified and would vie for the position were the vacancy be advertised for the competitive recruitment of the new executive director,” Omtatah said.
Mr Mahamed was appointed the CEO of the Board on November 24, 2014, for a period of three years.
Some of the NGOs that were deregistered under unclear circumstances during Fazul’s tenure include; Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), The Kalonzo Musyoka Foundation, The Evans Kidero foundation and Key Empowerment Foundation Kenya linked to Rosemary Odinga.
