Dr John Pombe Magafuli elected president of Tanzania. He has campaigned on a strong anti-corruption stance.
Dr John Pombe Magufuli Joseph was yesterday announced president elect of the republic of Tanzania after beating seven candidates in the much awaited results of the highly contested poll in the country’s political history.
Magufuli was elected on a Chama Cha Mapinduzi’s (CCM) ticket after garnering 8,882,935 votes (58.46 per cent)against his closest challenger Edward Ngoyai Lowassa of the Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema) who garnered 6,072,848 (9.97 per cent).
Magufuli emerged winner in what was termed as the hottest contest in the country’s political history.
Lowassa had however disputed the results claiming that he had beaten Magufuli by a big margin and accused the National Electoral Commission for conspiring with the ruling party candidate to rig him out.
The Tanzania National Electoral Commission (NEC), chair Justice (Rtd.) Damian Lubuva dismissed the claims and maintained that the commission carried out its functions in accordance with the law.
Magufuli has been presented with the election certificate, which shuts doors to any openings for contesting the election as the pronouncement of the electoral commission is final.
He now awaits the swearing in ceremony that is slated for Thursday, November 5th 2015.
