Chief justice Willy Mutunga has condemned the teargassing of CORD supporters at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) offices yesterday by GSU officers.

The CJ, through a quote by American writer and Nobel Prize laureate William Faulkner, alluded that teargassing peaceful demonstrations was a thing of the past.

“The past is never dead. The past is never dead. It’s not even past.” William Faulkner.

“Faulkner’s quote is my very painful reflection that teargassing of peaceful demonstrations has not been our past since our independence!” said Mutunga on his Twitter account.

CORD principals Raila Odinga and Moses Wetangula had led their protesters to go to present their petition to IEBC but heavily-armed police officers disrupted the procession by throwing teargas at the leaders and their supporters.

The opposition has maintained that IEBC has lost its credibility and is therefore it has no confidence that the commission will deliver a free and fair election next year.

They want the commission be disbanded and a new team named to replace it.
