NAIROBI (Reuters) – Kenyan police said several people were feared to have been killed in grenade attacks at two churches in Garissa, a town in northern Kenya that is an important military base from where ground forces have been deployed across the frontier into Somalia.
“Several people are feared to have been killed in the grenade attacks. The goons were clad in balaclavas and hurled the grenades at the Catholic Church and the AIC (African Inland Independent Church in the town,” regional deputy police chief Philip Ndolo, told Reuters.
10 dead, 50 injured in twin Garissa church attacks
Ten people have been killed and at least 50 more injured in separate grenade attacks at Catholic’s Central Cathedral and AIC churches in Garissa, police says.
According to North Eastern Deputy PPO, Philip Ndulu said AIC church suffered more casualties as it accounts for the 10 dead and at least 50 injured persons.
An eye witness Felix Kimanzi said four masked gunmen wearing blue uniforms sprayed bullets at the congregation of the AIC church resulting in the deaths and the high number of casualties.
He also said two grenades were hurled but only one exploded.

“So fare we have at least 10 killed, and more than 40 wounded following the grenade attacks,” regional deputy police chief Philip Ndolo, told Reuters.

Men reportedly opened fire on worshippers at the AIC church and threw grenades into mass at the Catholic church, sources told Al Jazeera.
