Atwoli Road, Kenyans Protest Naming after COTU boss

Kenyans are protesting a decision by Nairobi County officials to rename Dik-Dik road to “Atwoli Road” in honour of the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU-K) Secretary-General.

The protests, which have been on social media, escalated offline over the Weekend after an unknown protestor literally uninstalled the road sign.

Atwoli told off the critics and condemned the act, calling it an act of vandalism and dared Nairobians to uninstall the road sign bearing his name again, saying the county government had installed CCTV in the area.

“The Nairobi County Government has reinstalled the sign. If you think you came from the moon go try remove it again. Also, a CCTV has been installed for the security of the area,” Atwoli said in a tweet.

Atwoli’s tweet seems to only anger the irate Kenyans on Twitter (COT), who went ahead to ask him why “he was imposing himself on people who do not want him?”

Ali Ture: The Nairobi City County Govt should remove this thing off the road. It has zero value in the history of this country. It is a mockery to the Kenyan worker. Remove Francis Atwoli sign.

Nahashon Kimemia: We need to introduce sensible laws in this country. You can’t name a road in a neighborhood without the permission of permanent residents living there. Residents of Kileleshwa should vote on whether they want the road named after Francis Atwoli esp those living along Dik-Dik road.

Lawyer Ahmednassir says he’ll represent Boniface Mwangi in court if arrested for uninstalling “Atwoli Road Signage”

Activist Boniface Mwangi, who was happy when the road sign was taken down, was quick to express his disappointment on the prompt way in which the county government reinstalled the road sign, and vowed to remove it.

I came from the womb of a brave woman. If that sign is still up when l come back home, l shall personally remove it. @AtwoliDza you have violated chapter 6 of the constitution on integrity. Installing a camera to guard a road sign is a waste of our taxes to please your fat ego,” The activist, who is currently out of the country tweeted.

Lawyer Ahmednassir Abdullahi encouraged Boniface Mwangi to do it saying in case he’s arrested he will pay his legal fees or personally represent him in court.

If you are wrongly or maliciously arrested undertaking the noble task of removing that eyesore from the street, I will get you a lawyer or pay for your legal services or represent you personally…the choice is yours!”
