China has granted Kenya Kshs 34 billion, which will fund the construction of rural roads serving 70% of Kenya’s population.
President William Ruto concluded a three-day visit to China, which saw discussions centering around the future of Kenya’s infrastructure development, particularly focusing on the extension of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Naivasha to Kisumu and eventually to Malaba on the Ugandan border and the dual carriageway of the Rironi-Mau Summit-Malaba Road.
Ruto, who engaged President Xi Jinping in the sidelines of the Beijing African leaders summit, said these infrastructure projects are pivotal for Kenya’s economic growth, regional integration, and position as a transportation hub in East Africa.
Kenya/China – relations
Kenya and China have enjoyed a robust partnership, especially in infrastructure development. The SGR and major road projects have been central to this collaboration, significantly enhancing Kenya’s transportation network.
President Xi Jinping and Ruto Discussed extending the Standard Gauge Railway from Naivasha to Uganda, Rwanda, DR Congo, & Congo Brazzaville to enhance regional connectivity.
The construction of the Rironi-Mau Summit-Eldoret-Malaba dual carriageway, will ease the movement of goods and passengers to western Kenya & the broader region.
President Ruto also Emphasised the development of the LAPSSET corridor projects, particularly the Lamu-Garissa-Isiolo road, which will drive investment in Kenya’s Northern & North-Eastern regions, as well as in neighboring countries.

SGR Kenya
The SGR, initially connecting Mombasa to Nairobi, has been a game-changer in freight and passenger transport. The extension from Naivasha to Kisumu and eventually to Malaba on the Ugandan border will spur economic growth in the region and is expected to is expected to boost local industries by reducing transportation costs and times.
This extension is crucial for several reasons:
Regional Integration: Extending the SGR to the border will facilitate smoother trade with Uganda and other landlocked countries like Rwanda and South Sudan.
Economic Growth: Improved rail connectivity is expected to boost local industries by reducing transportation costs and times.
Job Creation: The construction phase and subsequent operation of the extended railway line will create employment opportunities for thousands of Kenyans.
Dual Carriageway of the Rironi-Mau Summit-Malaba Road
The Rironi-Mau Summit-Malaba Road is a critical segment of the Northern Corridor, the busiest highway in East Africa. Upgrading this road to a dual carriageway will have significant impacts:
