WHO: Kenyan Women Among Most Obese in Africa

A report by the World Health Organisation (WHO) into nutrition in Africa claims that Kenyan women are among the most obese in Africa.

On the obesity scale Kenyan women rank ninth in the WHO report out of the 36 Africa countries from which data was gathered.

The most overweight women in Kenya, the report states, live in Nairobi and Kirinyaga.

WHO found that Swaziland and Lesotho women were the most overweight in Africa. The least obese women are found in Ethiopia, Madagascar and Burundi, the study says.

33 PERCENT OF KENYAN WOMEN OVERWEIGHT

Obesity in mothers raises the likelihood that their offspring will be overweight. Overweight women, meanwhile, are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure and diabetes.

According to the Ministry of Health, 33 percent of Kenyan women are overweight.

As African nations get wealthier there is also a tendency for their populations to eat more and just as importantly, not to eat well. Doctors have longed warned that the answer is for people to eat a healthier diet and get more exercise.
