Waititu Arrested Over Graft

Kiambu governor Ferdinard Waititu has been arrested earlier today after he surrendered himself at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission offices in Nairobi.

Public Prosecutions (DPP) On Friday ordered Waititu’s arrest, his wife Susan Ndung’u and five others over corruption charges.

The governor and the other suspects are accused of having received Sh51.2 million proceeds of the irregular tender awarded to M/S Testimony Enterprises Limited for road works.

Governor Waititu and his wife were reported to be hiding after detectives failed to get hold of them despite having camped at their a residence as early as 5.30 AM on Saturday. Waititu’s wife is still at large.

The rest of the suspects being sought for arrest include; M/S Testimony Enterprises Limited directors Beth Wangeci, Charles Mbuthia Chege and his wife and three other tender evaluation committee members, Zacharia Njenga Mbugua, Anselm Gachukia Wanjiku and Samuel Muigai Mugo.

The scandal in question involves a tender worth Sh588 million and fraudulent acquisition of Sh221 million public property.

In May, a Kiambu magistrate, who has since been suspended over the mater,  issued a Sh500,000 anticipatory bail to Governor Waititu after officers from the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission arrested Waititu over alleged involvement in the irregular award of tenders valued at Sh588 million, fraudulent acquisition of public funds, conflict of interest and money laundering.

Chief Justice David Maraga suspended Kiambu Principal Magistrate Brian Khaemba following recommendations by the Judiciary Ombudsman.
