Investigative journalist Erick Kabendera has been detained allegedly without being charged by Tanzania’s security services.

Kabendera was reportedly taken from his home in Mbweni by men who identified themselves as police officers.

“Any political system – even one with a written Constitution – has some deeply rooted non-constitutional norms that political leaders violate only at great cost.” reads a pinned tweet on Kabendera timeline shared In February last year.

As reported by The Citizen, Kabendera’s wife said her husband was taken by plain-clothed men who refused to identify themselves. The men allegedly cut the house’s internal phone system and took the family’s mobile phones before forcing the outspoken journalist in a white Alphard car.

Journalist within and outside Tanzania have condemned the arrest, terming it as an onslaught to press freedom.
