“Today I met a lady who was nearly raped when she had gone to breastfeed her baby at about 3 am. The only thing that saved her was her voice. She screamed and the attacker took off,”
Kenyans on social media have gone ballistic following a story posted on a popular Facebook group, exposing the plight mothers in postnatal wards at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) go through especially that of rape.
According to the post on the group Buyer Beware security is a big issue especially for mothers who have kids in the nursery. Apparently, the nurseries are on the ground floor and the wards hosting the new mothers are on the third floor and routinely, the mothers have to make their way to the nursery every 2-3 hours to breastfeed the babies and these trips are always a nightmare for the mothers as they are exposed to rapists.
“Today I met a lady who was nearly raped when she had gone to breastfeed her baby at about 3 am. The only thing that saved her was her voice. She screamed and the attacker took off,” The post reads in part.
The post was followed by a series of comments from victims who had gone through similar ordeals at Kenyatta hospital as captured at the end of this article.
The elevators at KNH are known for harbouring pickpockets but the rape ordeals had not been reported in the public domain until yesterday.
The rape threats are so real that patients recount that nurses at the facility always advise them to walk in groups for safety sake. The perpetrators are alleged, morgue attendants who go to collect bodies from the wards. They reportedly first scare the victims almost to death by exposing the dead bodies and before the poor women can compose themselves they have already pounced on them.
KNH is yet to respond to these allegations as calls to the respective authorities have remained unanswered and it’s not clear if the management has records of these ordeals but in the meantime, the story has gone viral and as is the norm we can expect a press statement later in the day.
Below are some of the stories shared by mothers who have fell victims to the rape threats at KNH.
