Murder At Got Alila – TV show to give access to secret US telexes

The much-awaited documentary series Who Killed Dr Robert Ouko and Why?, a major new investigation into the, to date, unsolved murder of the former Foreign Affairs Minister in February 1990, premiered yesterday evening on Citizen TV.

The six-part documentary series will continue running tonight at 9:30 pm, until Tuesday next week.

The production of Citizen TV’s ‘Murder at Got Alila: Who Killed Dr Robert Ouko…and Why?’ has involved 1000’s of man-hours of research over the last three years.

23 film interviews were used in the making of the series and information was sought from over 40 people in off-camera interviews, all of whom were directly or indirectly involved with Dr Robert Ouko murder story. Thousands of pages of testimony and information from all of the available public records, together with material from media archives, were also combed for information.

The series also reveals for the first time evidence found in previously unpublished secret and confidential telexes between the US Embassy in Nairobi and the State Department in Washington just before Ouko’s murder and during the investigation into his death.

Focus of tonight’s episode: the Washington Trip

Tonight’s episode focusses on the Washington Trip, which was one of the theories previously reported as a motive behind Ouko’s murder.

The ‘Washington trip’ theory states that Robert Ouko was murdered because of a falling out he had with top government officials on a Kenya delegation’s trip to Washington just days before his death. The theory espouses the notion that Ouko fell out with President Moi and Minister for Energy, Nicholas Biwott.

The alleged reason for this ‘row’: that Robert Ouko had met with US President George Bush Snr without Moi’s permission.

As part of tonight’s Citizen TV documentary, however, we are to be shown previously confidential telexes that irrefutably prove no such meeting, and indeed no such row, could have taken place.

Robert Ouko’s last public address to be shown in Murder at Got Alila: Washington Trip

Tonight’s programme will also show footage that has never been broadcast before – Ouko’s last public address at the Imperial Hotel in Kisumu, filmed just three days before he was murdered.
