‘Chicken-gate’ scandal suspects, James Oswago and Trevy Oyombra, arrested

Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chief executives James Oswago and agent Trevy Oyombra have been arrested and arraigned in court today morning over the ‘Chicken-gate’ scandal.

According to EACC, it has found evidence of criminal culpability on the part of Oswago and Oyombra together with two others Hamida Ali Kibwana and Kenneth Karani in its report to the Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko, who agreed with the recommendations.

EACC said its officers are still investigating former officials of Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) who had also been linked to the scandal. The commission also exonerated other IEBC and KNEC officials who had been linked to the chicken gate scandal saying it didn’t find any criminal culpability on their part.

The ‘Chicken-gate’ scandal involved government officials in IEBC and KNEC who conspired with directors of a British firm, Smith and Ouzman, to earn ballot papers printing contracts.

In February 2015, two former directors of the British Company, Nicholas Charles Smith, 43, and his father, Christopher John Smith, 71, were convicted by a London court.

Judge Daniel Pearce-Higgins sentenced the younger Smith, a former Sales and Marketing Director for the firm, to a three-year in prison for the crime. Smith and Ouzman were fined more than Sh300 million for bribing the Kenyan officials at KNEC and IEBC and public pressure had since then been mounting on the DPP to follow suit and prosecute their Kenyan accomplices who were still walking scot free allegedly because there was no sufficient evidence to prosecute them.
