An inquest into the murder of six-month-old baby Samantha Pendo, who was killed in Nyalenda, Kisumu county in 2017, during the political unrest that followed the 2017 elections, has found five senior police officers guilty of her murder.
Magistrate Beryl Omollo ruled that she is satisfied that Baby Pendo died from severe head injuries inflicted on her by members of the National Police Service.
Baby Pendo was clobbered to death when police broke into their house on the night of August 10 during an operation aimed at quelling the protest that ensued after the electoral commission declared Uhuru Kenyatta the President-elect.
The officers are commanders namely; OCS John Thiringi, former county commander Titus Yoma, former OCPD Kisumu East Christopher Mutune, Inspector of Police Linah Kogei and Benjamin Koima. 31 more policemen will also be probed for the Baby Pendo’s murder.
The parents of baby Pendo Joseph Abanja and Lancer Achieng’ Abanja are happy that at least justice has been served to their angel and hope that the ruling serves as a lesson to the police on how to conduct themselves in the future.
