At least 10 people are reported to have died and many are still missing after a dam burst in Nakuru County last night.

The Patel Dam in Solai burst at about 9pm yesterday evening inundating villages nearby. 40 people are reported to have been rescued but about the same number are currently missing.

Water from the burst dam swept across a radius of two kilometers in which about 2,500 people live.

Injured survivors were taken to medical centres in in Bahati and Nakuru.

The affected dam is located about 30 kilometers from Nakuru on the land of prominent farmer Mansukur Patel in the Bahati Sub-County.

Two other dams in the area are being assessed over fears that they are at risk of bursting.

Over 100 people have died and 250,000 been displaced in Kenya in recent weeks as a result of the heavy and continuing rainfall that has affected 10 counties.
