Kamlesh Pattni to receive Kshs 7 billion in damages for duty free shops eviction from their airport premises.
Kenya’s public coffers is set lose at least Sh7 billion in damages to Diplomatic Duty Free Shops, which are associated with golden berg architect Kamlesh Pattni following the forcible eviction from local airports two years ago.
According to a report by the Public investments committee (PIC) the country would have been spared the loss if KAA had considered the legal implications before carrying out the illegal evictions. PIC maintains that former Stephen Gichuki, CEO (KAA) together with various officials should be held personally liable for the loss.
The report indicates that the case will cost the country at least sh 17 billion.
“Through his action, Kenya public stands to lose not less than Sh7 billion which World Duty Free is claiming for loss incurred during forceful eviction,” the report says.
In August 1, 2013, KAA demolished duty-free shops and lounges belonging to Pattni at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Wilson Airport and the Moi International Airport in Mombasa.
