Heavy rainfall has triggered unprecedented flooding in various parts of Kenya. Rivers burst their banks leaving homes, farmlands, and critical infrastructure marooned. Regions such as Kisumu, Nairobi, Garissa, and Kisii have borne the brunt of the ongoing floods, with reports of landslides and flash floods exacerbating the situation.

In Nairobi areas such as Githurai, Athi river, Mathare and Mwiki hundreds have been left homeless after their homes were either swept away or Marooned.

Humanitarian Crisis

The toll on human lives and well-being is staggering. Tens of thousands of Kenyans have been forced to flee their homes in search of higher ground, seeking refuge in makeshift shelters or with relatives. Access to clean water, food, and healthcare has become increasingly scarce, raising concerns about the spread of waterborne diseases and malnutrition, particularly among vulnerable populations.

Economic Disruption

The floods have dealt a severe blow to Kenya’s economy, particularly its agricultural sector. Crops have been washed away, livestock lost, and infrastructure damaged, disrupting supply chains and markets. Small businesses are grappling with the financial fallout, struggling to recover from the losses inflicted by the inundation of their premises and the interruption of trade routes.
