It’s all smiles for motorists in the country after the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) announced a further reduction of fuel up to Sh 9 per litre.

In Nairobi, petrol will retail at Sh 92.88 per litre while diesel and kerosene will sell at Sh 83.35 and Sh 65.59 respectively. Consumers in Mombasa will pay Sh 89.57 for super petrol, Sh 80.06 for diesel and Sh 62.84 per litre of kerosene.

The prices are expected to get a further decline in the next review set to be carried out mid next month.

“We anticipate the benefits to continue in the next review. This is the lowest price we have set in a period of four years, “said ERC’s Director General, Joseph Ng’ang’a.

However, commuters will not be enjoying benefits of the drop in fuel prices as public transport operators do not intend to reduce bus fares.

Simon Kimutai, chairman of the Matatu Owners Association maintained that fuel is only a small fraction of expenses within the transport industry.

“We also need to consider other factors involved in the public transport business like high prices of vehicles since the introduction of the value added tax (VAT),” he said.
