The new Uhuru Park is poised to become a vibrant hub for recreation, relaxation, and cultural activities, catering to the diverse needs of Nairobi’s populace.
The newly revamped Uhuru Park was officially re-opened to the public on Saturday after extensive renovations over the last two years.
Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson announced Uhuru Park’s reopening saying the Kenya Defence Forces had formally handed the park back to City Hall, marking its readiness for public use.
The park, along with Central Park, had been closed in 2022 to facilitate renovations initiated by the defunct Nairobi Metropolitan Service.
The refurbished park now boasts iconic structures, including monuments commemorating Mau Mau freedom fighters, the Pope, and peace, love, and unity. A more defined Freedom Corner has been established in memory of the late Prof. Wangari Maathai, further enriching the visitor experience.
The new-look Uhuru Park features an old aircraft that has been converted into a modern high-end hotel, adding a unique touch to the park’s ambiance.

The park also has beautiful waterfronts, a plant nursery, a skating park, a nature trail, an outdoor library, jogging and cycling tracks, a maintenance yard, offices, and a shearer garden, offering diverse recreational and leisure options for park-goers.
