Renovation works spearheaded by the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) were suspended on Monday after construction workers unearthed a large concrete cross underneath the floor of the market’s fish section.

The workers were digging out the old damaged floor in order to replace it when they discovered the structure.

The Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS), said it had cordoned the site and notified the National Museum of Kenya to send in archeologists to study the site.

City Market is one of the oldest markets in Kenya. It was constructed in the 1930s as a European-only market.

The Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) was established by President Uhuru Kenyatta in March last year to oversee the management of Nairobi County and run the four major functions of the county government that former Governor Mike Sonko transferred to the National Government.

The four functions transferred to the National government include; Health, Transport, Public Works and Urban Planning.

NMS is headed by Major General Mohammed Abdallah Badi who is the Director-General and his deputy Enos Onyango Momanyi.
