Man who Underwent first Kidney Transplant in Embu Hospital Dies

A 39 year old man , who became the first patient to undergo the  inaugural kidney transplant in Embu Level Five Hospital died a day after the surgery.

Doctors had announced that the kidney transplant was successful and the patient, Antony Njiru, had been responding well to treatment at the Intensive Care Unit.

Renal surgeon Philip Cheptinga nephrologist from Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, who led the surgery, said one of the patient’s blood vessel had a clot which hampered the flow of blood from the heart to the Kidney.

According to Embu County Chief Health Officer Grace Kombuthi, the 24 hour surgery was carried out by a team of surgeons from Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital and Embu Level Five Hospital.

The patient’s brother had donated the kidney.

The first kidney transplant at the Embu Level Five hospital, which was done on Friday last weeks,  was witnessed by Embu Governor Martin Wambora, University of Embu deputy vice chancellor Kiplagat Kotut and Embu Health Executive, Dr Jamleck Muturi.
