Angry residents torch Rongai matatu after it kills cyclist. The matatu driver perpetrated a hit-and-run, killing the 20-year old cyclist.
The notorious matatus plying the Rongai route are in the news once again for the wrong reasons after one of the mini-buses plying the route was torched after running over a cyclist on Saturday along Lang’ata Road.
According to eye-witness accounts, the matatu was over speeding on the wrong lane when it crashed the 20 year old cyclist, who died on the spot.
The driver took off after the accident, prompting the crowd, mostly boda boda riders to torch the bus.
Lang’ata Police boss Elijah Mwangi has however cautioned members of the public against taking the law into their hands.
No arrest has been made so far though police are pursuing the driver of the mini-bus.
In September last year, a matatu plying the same Rongai route killed four passengers and left others injured after it lost control and overturned on Lang’ata road but even with the public outcry that ensued after the accident, which saw students of Multimedia university take to the streets in protest since the victims of the accident were students from the institution,.
A month later, a crew of another matatu in the same route assaulted a male passenger, leaving him with a broken lip.
