At least 14 children have been confirmed dead following a stampede at Kakamega primary school on Monday evening. Several others were left injured, some critically.
Western Region Police Commander Peris Kimani confirmed the report, saying 20 were treated at the county’s general and referral hospital and discharged.
The circumstances that led to the stampede are not clear but according to reports, which the KF has not verified, a teacher was chasing the pupils down a flight of stairs to go home around 5 pm when the tragedy occurred.
