Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has overseen the installation of a cold room at Pumwani Maternity Hospital.

“The new cold room is fully operational and health workers at the facility are now required to store all the bodies in the cold room as per international health standards. My administration is committed in ensuring all Nairobi City County hospitals are fully equipped to ensure quality provision of health care,” Sonko said while unveiling the unit,” Sonko said.

Pumwani hospital has also been fitted with a new oxygen plant and a modern surgical unit for deliveries. The new maternity wing includes a new theatre, modern bathrooms with hot showers and new beddings.

“We are finalizing with the renovation of the new surgical ward 7 at the Pumwani Maternity Hospital with a bed capacity of 60 beds,” he said.

The governor has been spearheading the renovation of the hospital following a routine impromptu tour of the facility in September that brought to fore the infrastructure crisis at the facility after he discovered bodies of 12 infants covered in plastic bags and stashed in boxes.

The medics at Pumwani defended the issue saying the hospital lacked a cold room.

Governor Mike Sonko went ahead to donate cooler boxers as a temporary measure to solve the morgue crisis at the Pumwani Maternity Hospital.
