Prime Place Building Demolished As Kenya Railways Moves To Reclaim Land

The Prime Place building, which is located opposite the Nyayo National Stadium has been demolished for being illegally erected on the Railway Reserve.

“In an early morning exercise today, we managed to demolish structures that were on the railway reserve illegally. The exercise targeted the stretch of land between Nyayo Stadium and Mbagathi,” The Kenya Railways said in a tweet.

The property, which houses the prime restaurant, a pharmacy, salon, boutique and a cosmetics shop is linked to a politician.

The Kenya Railways had in September last year warned encroachers that their structures will be demolished as they were posing several challenges to railway operations.

“The encroachment of the Railway Reserve Land has posed several challenges to our operations. Our safety standards are compromised resulting in derailments alongside other challenges which include delays and vandalism,” said Acting Managing Director Philip Mainga.

The demolition of Prime Place is the first one this year after the numerous demolition of buildings on riparian that kicked off in 2018.
