A group of Nigerians living in Kenya stormed their commissioner’s residence in Nairobi on Wednesday in protest over what they are calling increased harassment by the Kenyan police.

They were also protesting the death of one of their own, a student at the United States International University (USIU) who allegedly died under unclear circumstances in the hands of the police.

The victim, identified as Bamiyo Ashande, was allegedly brutally assaulted by police officers at Kiambu police station on Tuesday.

Photos circulating on Social media show a healthy Bamiyo seated at the back of a police truck and another with him laying immobile on a bed in what looks like a hospital with bandages on his chest.

According to the Nigerians who were chanting “they are killing us” they have lost colleagues in rising cases of extrajudicial killings.

They alleged that four Nigerians have been killed by the police in the past month since the government launched a crackdown on illegal immigrants.

The Nigerians further cited that the police is always asking for bribes even for those with legal documents to prove that they are in the country legally.

It took the intervention of Kilimani Police to control the crowd, which had overpowered guards at the Nigerian Embassy in Kenya along Lenana road and had accessed the premises and were vandalizing property.
