The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has now been left handicapped following the resignation of suspended chairman Mumo Matemu.

“I have taken this considered decision solely for the purpose of subordinating my personal rights to the greater public good in the fight against corruption,” Mr Matemu said in a statement.

Matemu, who had served since 2012, became the final commissioner in EACC to leave office after two others resigned. His deputy Irene Keino resigned on April 30. Keino said that she wanted to spare her family the anguish of going through the judicial process meant to investigate her suitability in office.

Another commissioner, Jane Onsongo had resigned in March citing pressure from outsiders on her work at the EACC.

Mumo Matemu and his deputy Irene Keino were suspended on April 23 by President Uhuru Kenyatta after parliament voted to have the duo sent home. A tribunal was then formed on the recommendation of the National Assembly to probe the matter however it now remains unclear on how it will execute its function considering that there is no current commissioners to be summoned.

IMPUNITY FIGHTS BACK

Prior to the woes surrounding the anti-corruption chiefs, President Uhuru Kenyatta had asked the commissioners to investigate a number of senior officials who had been named in the anti-graft agency’s corruption report.

The president, when releasing the EACC report on anti corruption, asked that public officials named to take leave from office for 60 days to pave way for investigations.

EACC had only interrogated 25 out of the 175 people named in the report prior to the chiefs being suspended. The Commission had forwarded files of three Cabinet Secretaries to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Well, Matemu’s resignation was no surprise as Kenyans were pretty aware that it was just a matter of time as history keeps repeating itself as far as the anti-graft body is concerned. Impunity continues to fight back at the body, rendering it a toothless bull dog.

The commissioners will be replaced and EACC will continue existing on paper.
