Heaven help us but it’s the year 2021 and ‘witches’ are still being ‘lynched’ in Kenya.
Last Sunday four elderly people were burnt alive by a mob in Nyagonyi village in Marani, Kisii County on the suspicion that they were practicing witchcraft. Three of those lynched were women and one a man reportedly aged over 80.
Police have named the three murdered women as Jemima Mironga (60), Agnes Ottoto (57), Sigara Onkware (62) and the man Sindege Mayaka (85).
‘Coven’ Alleged to Have Abducted Student
The four were reportedly accused by local residents of being part of a coven of witches that had abducted a secondary school student who was found unconscious on path near his home.
Local people claimed that the student had been abducted before and that the night before he was allegedly attacked a cross had been planted outside his house.
Locals also said he had been sick for some time and that his parents have spent all they own to pay for his treatment.
‘Witches’ Dragged From Home and Burnt Alive
Villagers said that when they found the young man they spat on him where after he regained consciousness and began to talk. It was then that the four witches were attacked by a hysterical mob.
One woman was dragged from her home and her house set on fire. Two others were burnt to death after reportedly blaming the sorcery on the other alleged ‘witches’.
By the time the police arrived on the scene the area where the lynching took place had been set ablaze and the investigation is now on-going but there are also reports that local armed youths were out hunting more suspected ‘witches’.
