Human Rights watch Amnesty International has condemned the government for the ongoing demolitions of homes and property in Kibera slums, saying its a violation of Human rights Obligations.

According to a statement issued by Amnesty’s Executive Director Irungu Houghton the ongoing demolitions in Kibra, which will render over 30,000 people homeless is in violation of Kenya’s national and international human rights obligations.

“The goal of adequate and dignified housing cannot be met by stripping the 30,000 inhabitants of the only housing, shops, clinics and schools they have,”  Irungu Houghton said.

Irungu Houghton further states that the government’s move to kick off the demolitions in Kibera contravened a Rapid Resettlement Action Plan agreement signed by various government agencies namely; the Kenya Urban Roads Authority, the Kenya National Human Rights Commission and the National Lands Commission.

“Demolition prior to the completion of the Resettlement Action Plan betrays the public trust and violates our laws. These forced must be halted,” He said.

NGONG -KIBERA-LANG’ATA LINK ROAD

The demolitions in Kibera’s Mashimoni, Lindi, Kambi Muru and Kisumu Ndogo villages, which began last week are part of the government’s effort to dislodge the illegal structures in order to pave way for construction of a link road between Ngong road and Lang’ata road.

Schools, homes, business premises were flattened yesterday with residents decrying the action by the government.

Makina Self-help Primary School, Adventure Pride Centre and Egesa Children’s Centre, a children’s home are some of the structures that were taken down.

The Sh2bn Ngong Road-Kibera-Kiungu Karumba-Langata link road is aimed at easing traffic congestion.
