Huawei Co Ltd could role out smartphone’s ran by the company’s own operating system by the end of the year.

According to Chinese state media outlet Global Times, Huawei has been testing its smartphone operating system Harmony, which is called “Hongmeng” in Chinese and the first smartphones powered by the technology could be on sale by the end of the year.

The development comes in the wake of U.S. government directive that saw Google Suspend key technical services with Huawei in May, including the transfer of hardware and software.

If nothing changes, this means that Huawei can no longer license Google’s proprietary Android operating system and other services that it offers including access to apps such as the Gmail, which would mean that future Huawei phones will not have the Google services that users have come to expect on Android devices.

The directive bars US companies from telecommunications trade with foreign companies said to threaten America’s national security.

While unveiling harmony last week, Richard Yu, the CEO of Huawei’s consumer business group Harmony said it’s completely different from Android and iOS,” Apple’s (AAPL) operating system.

Richard Yu had however said that Huawei will switch to the Harmony system when they can’t use Android anymore.
