Femicide On the Rise As World Marks 16 Days of Activism

There’s an increasing number of cases of Gender Based Violence across the country even as the 16 days of Activism come to a close.

The 16 Days of Activism to End Gender Based Violence is an annual international campaign which runs from 25th November to 10th December, calling for the prevention and elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls.

At least 10 women and girls have been killed in the past two months alone, in separate incidents in different parts of the country and what is even more alarming is that young people are involved in these cases.

24 YEAR OLD GIRL RAPED, MURDERED IN KASARANI

Last Month, 24-year old, Leah Momanyi, a  Kisii University student was raped and stabbed to death in her Kasarani estate apartment. Her body was reportedly discovered two days later but police are yet to make any arrests in connection with the brutal murder even as Leah’s family continue to cry for justice.

18 YEAR OLD KISUMU POLYTECHNIC STUDENT STABBED TO DEATH

The same month, 18 year old Dorcas Jamilla, a first-year student at Kisumu Polytechnic was stabbed to death by her 27-year-old boyfriend allegedly after dumping him.

The suspect had taken to Facebook before the murder to post his frustrations with Jamila.

“Be careful when you love that girl you see on my profile picture. She has killed me. Real love is not there and can never exist. I am the first man in her life but now I stink to her and her family who thinks I will waste their daughter because I am poor,” read the post on Facebook.

Still in the same “Black November”, another teenage girl was killed in Mirera, Naivasha, allegedly for refusing sexual advances from a form three boy known to her.

TEACHER ARRESTED FOR MURDER OF TEENAGE MUM AND HER CHILD

A primary school teacher has been charged over the killing of a Class Eight pupil and her 10-month-old daughter, allegedly to cover up for the offence of defiling a minor.

Eric Otieno Ooko of Gethsemane Academy in Mfangano Island, Mbita Sub-county was arraigned in Homa Bay High Court yesterday, charged with the murder of Rihana Nafula and her daughter Everlyn Aoko, which he is said to have committed between October 21 and 26, 2019 in Mbita Sub-county.

Oloo had already been taken to court prior to the murders to answer to defilement charges.

IVY WANGECHI HACKED TO DEATH

In April this year, a brutal , blatant murder of a Moi University medical student, shocked the nation;

Ivy Wangechi was hacked to death outside outside the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret town by her machete wielding boyfriend Naftali Kinuthia.

According to data by Counting Dead Women Kenya, which counts the reported number of Kenyan girls and women who have been killed through violence, a total of 94 women have been killed between January 1 2019 and December 2, 2019.
