The Ukay Mall, Westlands, has become the latest iconic building to be demolished in the recent efforts by the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) to reclaim riparian land.
The Ukay Mall, Westlands, which had been popular for housing its anchor tenant Nakumatt, has become the latest iconic building to be demolished in the recent efforts by the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) to reclaim riparian land.
Demolition of the Ukay Mall started at 5 AM on Friday morning.
The Nakumatt Ukay was prone to flooding when it rained.
The owners of the mall had moved to court to obtain an order block the demolition but the High Court on Thursday declined to issue orders stopping the Government from forging ahead with the demolition.
On Tuesday, South End Mall was also brought down.
According to NEMA, it has earmarked 4,000 structures for demolitions.
