Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla on Tuesday announced that his company Neuralink has been working on a brain-machine interface that will enable humans to “merge” with Artificial Intelligence (AI), giving people superhuman intelligence.
According to Musk, Nueralink was initially inspired by the need to provide a solution for brain-related disorders but the brain-machine technology can be used as a means of brain enhancement, giving humans the option to achieve a symbiosis with AI.
“This could eventually lead to a future of “superhuman intelligence”, said Musk during Neuralink Launch Event in San Francisco.
The Nueralink technology will basically involve implants on the human brain that will be connected to a computer interface via AI. The implants will be groups of wireless, minuscule, flexible electrode “threads” implanted into the human brain by a neurosurgical robot.
These threads, according to Musk, will be very tiny and will detect and record the electrical signals in the brain, and transmit this information outside the body.
“Each thread is smaller than one-tenth of the size of a human hair and contains 192 electrodes,” he said.
Musk also announced that Neuralink had also built a neurosurgical robot that is capable of inserting six threads into the human brain per minute.
If rolled out, the technology will enable paralyzed people to use the implanted device to control phones or computers.
Musk founded Neuralink in 2016 to develop a high-bandwidth, implantable brain-computer interface (BCI). He hopes to test the system on a human patient before the end of 2020.
