More than 1.7 million people have died of Aids related illnesses in Kenya since the virus was first identified in 1984.

Each year it is estimated that there are over 100,000 new HIV infections in the country, of which 13,000 are children.

1.6 million people are living with HIV in Kenya which is now ranked fourth in the world based on the number of women living with HIV/Aids. Only half of those living with HIV/Aids have access to anti-retroviral drugs.

It was estimated in 2009 that 1.2 million children in Kenya had lost one or both of their parents to Aids.
