Celebrated Benga musician John De’Mathew has died following a road accident on Thika road on Sunday.

According to Thika Base Commander Elenah Wamuyu, Demathew’s car rammed into a lorry near the Blue Post Hotel in Thika, reportedly after attending a fundraiser of a fellow musician

He was pronounced dead on arrival at Thika Nursing Home.

The celebrated musician was the chairman of the Talented Musicians and Composers (Tamco) sacco, which comprises Benga artistes from the Mt Kenya region.

Tamco Sacco was launched in January this year as a unifying body for the musicians. While speaking during the launch De Mathew had also said that the sacco would serve as an empowerment group to uplift the artists welfare.

Some of John De’Mathew’s hit songs  include; ‘Ruhiu rwa Baba’ , ‘ Njata Yakwa’ and ‘Ngai he Namba’.
