Microsoft to stop updating Windows XP, increasing risk of cyber attack. Now is the time to update your Microsoft Windows subscription.
For those who are still using Windows XP, you will need to upgrade to one of the newer versions or expose yourself to potential risks such as cyber attacks because as of yesterday (Tuesday 8th April midnight) Microsoft ended support for the 12 year old operating system.
By ending support for Windows XP it simply means that there will be no more official security updates and bug fixes for the operating system.
The operating system was a game changer and an instant hit when it was launched. It was known for its stability and was the frontier of Graphical User Interface. This made it the most popular Windows operating system even ironically overshadowing newer versions. No wonder it is still being used by 25 percent of computer users, including some banks, other major companies and governments according to the BBC.
Here in Kenya many people will be affected as it is still the most used operating system despite three other major releases since 2001. Some individuals, companies, NGOs and even government institutions still use the aged software.
As expected, Kenyans took to social media to express their views on the matter most of the comments being sorrowful as they bid their farewell to the much loved Windows XP.
Indeed Windows XP has served its purpose well but Kenyans should prepare for change as it is the nature of technology. And for those still using windows XP you will need get offline whenever possible, update other softwares that are running on XP and remove administrative rights to prevent others from installing anything, and you might also need to switch to another browser apart from Internet explorer.
