Three Kenyans gave something to smile about this weekend. Kenyans win men’s and women’s New York Marathon and Wanyama scores winner in prem.
It was a Kenyan affair this weekend as three Kenyans gave us something to smile about in the sports world.
Former marathon record holder Wilson Kipsang and Mary Keitany won the New York men and women marathon respectively in a cold and windy Sunday. Kipsang crossed the finish line in 2 hours 10 minutes 59 seconds beating Ethiopia’s Lelisa Dedisa by seven seconds to win $100,000. Mary Keitany, winner of the 2012 London Marathon, won the women’s marathon. She overcame Jemima Sumgong clocking 2 hours 25 minutes 7 seconds, three seconds better than Sumgong.
Victor Wanyama, the first Kenyan to play and score in the top flight English Premier League scored a decisive goal against a tough Hull City to stay second behind the unbeaten Chelsea in the Premier League.
Wanyama hit a spectacular 40 yard strike in the third minute which ended up to be the only goal that would give Southampton the precious three points. The less fancied Southampton has shocked the English Premier League followers with their extraordinary start to the season losing only twice and drawing once in 10 Premier League marches.
Looking at the big teams, Manchester City sit in third place, followed by Arsenal. Last year’s runners up, Liverpool have been struggling with form and sit in the 7th position while Manchester United’s woes continue this season having the worst start since 1986 with only 13 points in 10 games.
