Kenya wins first Rugby 7s world series competition. Kenya’s men’s rugby sevens team has finally done it and won a competition.
Kenya finally did it! After 17 years of trying, the Kenya rugby 7s finally made history by winning its first ever Sevens World series title in Singapore on Sunday after thrashing Fiji who were the favorites 30-7 in an exciting encounter. Fiji who have won the series twice were outclassed by the Kenyan boys and just couldn’t find answers to fired up Kenyans.
Oscar Ayodi opened the scoring for Kenya in the first half. Collins Injera who was named the tournament’s best player made two more successive tries making it 15-0 against the defending champions. Sammy Oliech wrapped up the first half by a try making it 20-0.
In the second half,Fiji started well and were rewarded by reducing the score to 20-7. But it wasn’t their day as Kenya responded through tries from Nelson Oyoo and later Frank Wanyama to wrap up the score to 30-7.
It was joy and celebration for the Kenyan rugby fans who have been waiting for this moment for so long and congratulatory messages flocked the social media. President Kenyatta joined Kenyans in congratulating the sevens team, saying, “You have made us proud, our star continues to shine as a powerhouse in sports.”“A brilliant, confident and powerful effort has earned Team Kenya a richly deserved victory,” the President stated.
