The rate of irregularities witnessed in the 2015 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination (KCSE) is 70 per cent higher than the previous year’s, revealed Education CS Fred Matiang’i as he announced the results yesterday.

5,101 candidates who sat for 2015 KCSE have had their results cancelled.

Matiang’i announced that the ministry was working on a radical change in the manner examinations are administered in order to curb exam cheating and also revealed that he had received a comprehensive report, bearing names of persons who may be arrested for perpetrating the vice.

“President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed my ministry and that of Interior and Co-ordination to hold a meeting with all education stakeholders and to table the report on cheating,” said Dr Matiang’i.

The CS also announced that the education ministry will set up a secretariat that will act as a communication center for candidates whose results were been cancelled.

“A secretariat will be set up at the Education Ministry to guide candidates whose results have been cancelled,” said Matiang’i. The secretariat will be open from 8am to 5pm every day and the team will explain to the candidates how their results were cancelled

PERFOMANCE AT PAR

While exam cheating in the 2015 exams surpassed that of 2014, the overall performance in last year’s examinations was ‘nearly at par’ with that of the previous year.

In the last year’s examinations 2,636 candidates scored A compared to 3,073 candidates who posted a similar grade in 2014. Of these, 1,976 were male candidates against 660 girls.

Overall, some 165,766 candidates scored the minimum university admission Grade of C+ and above, reflecting an increase of 16,049 candidates compared to 2014. Of these, 95,533 were boys and 70,233 girls.

Moi High School Kabarak was the best performer nationally in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination results released yesterday, for the second year running, with a mean score of 11.667.

Out of the 289 candidates from the school who sat for the exams, 202 scored grade A and the least candidate had a B.

Alliance High School followed closely with a mean score of 11.37.

Other top performers according to a list compiled by the Daily Nation, as the ministry no longer ranks schools, include: Utumishi Academy with a mean score of 11.1704, Kapsabet Boys 11.15, St Joseph’ Boys in Trans Nzoia County, 11.0, Sacho High School, 10.973, Light Academy, Nairobi, 10.93, Rang’ala Girls High School 10.9 and Kapsabet Girls High School 10.89.
